The holidays bring out the kid in all of us. For Rick Carrillo of El Paso, Texas, this special time of year inspired him to combine the magic of the holidays and the music of Disney into a spectacular light show that rivals something you might see at one of the iconic theme parks.
A few strings of lights and some old-fashioned carols? Not enough! Carrillo’s masterpiece is a rainbow of color that dances and flashes around his home to the perfect rhythm to some of Disney’s classic movie and theme park songs. There are even full projections of well-known scenes from Disney’s full-length animated features.
The 13-minute holiday light show was inspired by Walt Disney World’s “Happily Ever After” fireworks spectacular, which weaves many of Disney’s most popular stories into one touching lesson about going after your dreams. That idea of making your wishes comes true touched Carillo as he designed the show.
“As a kid, we didn’t have a lot of money, and my dad was able to take us to Disneyland any chance he could, so we have a lot of memories with Disney shows … you just get this feeling that anything is possible, your dreams can come true,” Carillo told Good Morning America.
This is Carillo’s second year putting together this multimedia production for the neighborhood. He kicked it off in 2018 to celebrate his daughter Susana’s first Christmas. People loved it.
It takes three months to string up the lights and program all of the music synchronizations for the finished product. Producing the video above so he could share his display with the world took another 70 to 100 hours.
The live show will stay up through Jan. 6.
“I’m thankful that everybody seems to be really enjoying it,” Carillo said. “This is a way for them to enjoy Christmas and get their minds off of things for a while.”
