The Roman Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge has released its list priests who have been credibly accused of sexual abuse involving minors. To see the list, scroll down.
Bishop Michael Duca released the names at a press conference today at noon. The Baton Rouge diocese is now the third diocese in Louisiana to release its list, although all dioceses in Louisiana have agreed to do so.
The Lafayette Diocese has not said when they will release their list. KATC has assembled a list of credibly accused priests from public records; to see that list, click here.
In his opening remarks, Duca said he doesn’t plan to allow this process to continue as it has in the past.
“I have heard from some and even felt this myself, that once this is done we can move beyond crisis mode and get back to normal,” Duca said. “But in this thinking, there already is a return to an old standard to get this done and sweep it under the carpet.”
Instead, Duca said, “this is an attempt to open a door to sexual abuse that not any of us want to open.”
Duca said that, over the years, victims have heard from their abusers “but also from the church,” to keep their abuse a secret.
“Victims of abuse must bear this pain, for others’ peace of mind, and they must do this alone,” he said. “Hopefully, a victim will see a name on this list and say “That’s me,” and it will give them the courage to come to a trusted friend, family member, counselor, or even to me and share their story, so that they might no longer bear this pain alone.”
Duca said the church must be proactive in supporting victims.
“We must be willing to share their pain, and admit our part in this tragedy, so we can be a support and not a barrier to the path of healing,” Duca said. “This is not the final piece. Rather, it is the beginning of a foundational change in the church’s way of acting with a focus on healing the victims of abuse, rather than protection of the status quo.”
Duca said the list is dynamic, and that more names will be added as more information is received.

The East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office released this statement:
The Catholic Diocese recently released information concerning alleged sexual abuse perpetrated by Catholic priests in the East Baton Rouge area. The release of information is likely to cause some degree of re-traumatization for the victims of these alleged crimes. The District Attorney’s office, as well as area law enforcement, is ready to work with any victims who wish to come forward as to these named individuals or others not named. Our office and law enforcement will review the individual circumstances of each case with each victim and evaluate the case against Louisiana prescription law, that in many cases has been extended over the years. Additionally, we will also assist in connecting any victims who may benefit from support and therapy to our local resources; for our assistance in connection to local resources, there is not a requirement that we review the case for criminal prosecution.
Call the Sex Crimes Division at (225) 389-3445 to either be connected to therapy and support resources or report the offense.
