Fans of the “Big Lebowski” have been waiting for over 20 years for a follow-up film. And finally, there’s a release date and a new title.
Now dubbed “The Jesus Rolls,” John Turturro’s follow-up to 1998’s “The Big Lebowski” will be released in early in 2020, according to industry reports. So movie-goers will have to wait just a little bit longer before being able to catch the flick in theaters.
Although some have described it as a sequel, the movie will feature an entirely new cast, making it more of a spin-off than a sequel. As far as we know, Jeff “The Dude” Bridges won’t be back for the new film (although we’re rooting for a surprise cameo.) Instead, the movie centers on a minor character from the first film, the creepy bowler Jesus Quintana, played by John Turturro.
Turturro, who also wrote and directed “The Jesus Rolls,” reportedly received permission from original directors Ethan and Joel Cohen to create a new movie based on his character.
“It feels like a good time to release a transgressive film about the stupidity of men who try and fail and try better to understand and penetrate the mystery of women,” Turturro said, describing the new movie in Variety.
“The Jesus Rolls” is also said to be inspired by the 1974 French film “Going Places” starring Gérard Depardieu.
As any fan knows, in addition to Bridges, cult classic “Big Lebowski” featured an amazing cast of actors, including Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and John Goodman. The new movie tries to re-create that magic with a cast that includes Bobby Cannavale, Audrey Tautou, Jon Hamm, Susan Sarandon, and Pete Davidson, who apparently plays a “gun-toting hairdresser.”
Shot in New York in the summer of 2016, the movie has reportedly been in “distribution limbo” for the past few years, but now Screen Media plans to release it next year.
We can’t wait to see if this new film lives up to “The Big Lebowski”‘s witty, strange legacy. Are you excited to see “The Jesus Rolls” when it hits movie theaters in 2020?
