UPDATE: We have more information on a stabbing that happened Monday morning on a St. Landry Parish school bus.
Grand Coteau Police tell us that one student suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Two students who were riding the bus to an alternative school in the Opelousas area were involved in a fight, police say.
It is not known if it was along-standing issue or something that just came up Monday, but one student stabbed another. They were the only people involved and no one else was injured, police say.
Neither of the children involved are Grand Coteau residents; the bus just happened to be in the town when the incident happened, a police spokesman said.
Superintendent Milton Batiste told our crew that, when the students began to fight the bus driver pulled over at a truck stop to call 911. He didn't give us the ages of the kids, but told us they are middle school to junior high school age.
A release from the school system describes the injury as a "cut" and says that it was done with a knife. The release says the students were fighting, and the injury happened as the bus driver was pulling over to call police.
"The safety and well-being of all students is our top priority. This isolated incident is taken extremely seriously. The student who possessed the weapon will be subject to disciplinary action adhering to school policy and procedures," the release states. "We ask everyone to respect the privacy of those involved as this is an ongoing matter. Thank you for your patience and understanding."
We also have a crew on the scene and will have more later today on KATC TV3.
