By the Numbers: Cajuns record doesn’t reflect growth

Posted

LAFAYETTE (KATC) — Louisiana football is 4-5 this season, 2-3 in Sun Belt play. But the Cajuns’ record doesn’t reflect where the Cajuns are in 2018.

You want a stat that may change how you view Louisiana football? Try conference plus-minus. Through five games the Cajuns are -3 on the year. A season ago, Louisiana went 4-4, finishing -69. The teams that blew out Louisiana a season ago, Arkansas State (+43) and Appalachian State (+49) went just 1-1 against Louisiana and are only +7 against Louisiana.

The Cajuns finish the year with Georgia State, South Alabama and ULM. Three teams they can beat, and make their record reflect the step forward Louisiana has taken.

“We’ve been in contention and in games throughout,” said head coach Billy Napier. “There are no moral victories. We feel like we belong and can win them all. That’s the goal every week. And going forward that’s the mentality.”
