LAFAYETTE (KATC) — Louisiana football coach Billy Napier is counting down the days to his head coaching debut.

Napier had made seven stops at five schools before arriving in Lafayette this fall. Napier was an offensive coordinator twice, a recruiting coordinator, grad assistant and position coach more often than not, but never a head coach.

He reflected Wednesday on how his responsibilities have changed over the years.

“It’s a new set of challenges, a new set of problems,” he said. “When you’re an assistant coach you have your grass to cut, and you mow it. When you’re an assistant you see it from a different angle. This is a head coach-play caller job and I think what I really value is hiring good staff and putting good people around you.”
