Van Gundy has agreed to be the next New Orleans Pelicans head coach and confirmed the rumors himself on his personal Twitter account Wednesday afternoon. Gundy takes over for Alvin Gentry, who was let go after a disappointing season with a 2-6 record in the bubble.
Reports from multiple outlets are reporting Gundy has agreed to a four-year contract. The Pelicans new head coach has previously coached the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, and Detroit Pistons. Most recently, he spent the 2019-2020 season as a game analyst for Turner/CBS Sports.
Gundy is no stranger to the NBA finals and staying in the top 10 in defensive rankings, both things that the Pelicans desperately need. New Orleans was 30-42 last season but returned a lot of talent, including forwards Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram.
