LAFAYETTE — "Not one, not two, not three..." Some days I like to picture Jacarde Carter and Trev Faulk repeating LeBron James' infamous moment in the LCA coaches office. Lafayette Christian football has won three-straight titles, and a fourth is well within grasp.
But it won't come easy.
The fifth seeded Knights are on the road Friday night playing Arch Manning, and Newman. It's a game that could very well be pitting the best two teams in Division III, in a semifinal match-up. Newman is unbeaten, 9-0, while LCA is 7-1 after a week one loss to Acadiana, the number one team in Class 5A.
The Knights were pushed to the edge in their quarterfinal win over Episcopal. Trailing 10-7 in the second half, LCA star, and LSU commit, Sage Ryan scored the go-ahead touchdown on a long run. Ryan was injured on the play and didn't return.
Key injuries have challenged the Knights, senior quarterback Ryan Roberts missed time early this year, fueling the emergence of freshman quarterback Ja'Juan Johnson. But the adversity has strengthened this team.
"When things got tough, I know I looked at all my friends, they looked at me and you could feel the brotherhood between us," said senior defensive end Luke Robinson. "I wasn't playing for myself, I was playing for the man next to me."
LCA (331) and Newman (337) are two of the highest scoring teams in Division III, both were held to 14 in quarterfinal wins.
