Welsh Greyhounds
Coach: Cody Gueringer
2019 Record: 3-9 (Lost in 2nd Round)
District: 6-2A
Notes: Greyhounds switching to Wing T in Year 2 of Gueringer era
In 2017, Welsh football won a state championship.
In 2018, Welsh football played in a state championship.
Over those two season the Greyhounds won a combined 25 games. But last fall, things went very differently in coach Cody Gueringer's first season, with Welsh finishing 3-9.
As the team's offensive coordinator in those title game runs, Gueringer helped implement Welsh's explosive spread offense. A scheme he is scrapping this season. Welsh is going old school, with the Wing-T Triple-option.
He says the Hounds just don't have the guys to execute the spread and stressed the importance of adjusting scheme's to fit the team.
That's a message being heard loud and clear by his players.
"I mean it's really different from the spread. I learned the spread my sophomore and junior year," Welsh offensive lineman Gavin Richard said. "Now coming into my senior year switching it up, it will be different. I think it will be better with the guys we have, the players we have, I think it will be more fluent."
"Our whole team is on board with our new offensive scheme and what we want to do," Welsh wide receiver Lincoln Wild said. "The whole team loves it. It really fits well with our senior class, so we have high hopes this season."
Former defensive back Austin Van Ness is expected to take over at quarterback in the new scheme this fall.
