The big takeaway from 2019 is that Notre Dame doesn't want history to repeat itself.
"Everything was dead, nobody said anything to each other. It was quiet," remembered senior center Boyd Gray.
Seeded number two in Division III, the Pioneers were beat in the state quarterfinals 24-21 by rival Catholic High. The loss marked the earliest postseason exit at Notre Dame since 2013.
"We have conversations about how things went wrong, and how things could have been better," said senior linebacker Lance Castille. "Anytime we talk about football we look back on last year."
The Pios return six starters, a small number for some teams a big number for Notre Dame, who is used to significant player turnover. They have 21 seniors including quarterback Parker Seilhan. Head coach wrote Seilhan into the gameplan last fall as a rotational quarterback, but he wound up starting four games because of an injury.
"It's not how we wanted his experience to come about," said Cook. "He started the jamboree and four games and those starts were huge in his confidence and our confidence in him and getting a good picture of what he's capable of doing."
