Southside Sharks
Coach: Josh Fontenot
Record: 6-5
District: 3-5A
Notes: 2019 was 1st year of varsity football at Southside
This season will have a bunch of unknowns. But that's nothing new for Southside.
You see, 2019 was the first year the Sharks officially played varsity football. With no expectations, Southside proceeded to put together a 6-5 campaign and a berth into the 5A playoffs.
“I think a lot of teams looked at us like it's their first year, they got small guys” Southside quarterback Dillon Monette explained. “But we all played football before. We all came up playing football. So we all practiced hard, worked hard and went out and played hard”
Things are only looking up for Southside, as the Sharks have 14 starters returning. That includes quarterback and Super 16 member Dillon Monette, who was the 2nd leading passer in Acadiana in 2019 with over 3,043 yards and 32 touchdowns.
The Sharks are also adding all-state selection and Mississippi State commit Malik Nabers to the mix at wide receiver.
For head coach Josh Fontenot, he sees this squad as the foundation of a potentially special program.
“It's our first 4 year class. These seniors are all guys that have been with us since the beginning.” Fontenot explained. “We’ve had a few transfer in, but these are the guys that laid the groundwork for what we hope to be a dominant program in the future. Not only have 14 starters back but all the seniors that took a chance on Southside and built something that has the potential to be a really big thing.”
“(We) have most of the guys returning, with that same energy and gelling,” Southside senior linebacker Culley Holden said. “I feel like it's going to be great season to kickoff throughout the year.”
