KATC's Senior Spotlight: Bub Willridge

JENNINGS — The Superdome may be off the table, but playing in a state championship is right where Jennings football wants to be.

The man who wants it most: senior quarterback Lawrence Willridge better known as Bub. He remembers the 51-14 heart breaking loss to St. James last year in the Superdome.

“I mean last year we were (seeded number) 23. So, no one expected us, they kind of looked at us like the underdog. But this year we hold a much higher spot,” he said.

A nice change, the undefeated bulldogs siting at number one in class 3A. The team’s ranking has changed, but Jennings has remains scrappy.

"We were getting down 14 points. We did not lead in any game for the first five games. Well the first 6 games. Seventh game got a little bit better and last week we took the lead early,” said head coach Rusty Phelps.

It was the quarterfinal game on the road that would be the ultimate test.

Doing what they do best, an epic come-from-behind win over 17th-seeded Lutcher, 50-49.

A task that needed all hands on deck.

“Number 14 that's my boy,” Willridge said. “He definitely comes clutch in the spotlight. Trevor and Jacorien, mean there all good players. They show up whenever it's time to show up."

With another big game on the line Willridge said the team is on a mission.

"As a team we don't look at last year, depending on this year. We just take every game step by step.”
