WELSH (KATC) — Welsh football is back in the dome for the second straight year, and this time the Greyhounds face one of the most talented teams in all of Louisiana.

Amite packs a roster of star power. Defensive tack Ishmael Sopsher, athlete Devonta Lee, receiver Kyle Maxwell  and quarterback Amani Gilmore are all top in-state prospects according to 247sports. Sopsher and Lee are both ranked in the top-10 in Louisiana, and are likely LSU commits according to the site. Maxwell is a Louisiana Tech commit, Cooper is going to Kentucky.

All that talent led Amite to 13-straight wins to finish the season, outscoring teams by 522 points along the way. The Warriors lone loss came to Country Day in the season opener.

Welsh, however, may be the best team Amite has seen since Country Day. The hounds don’t roster anyone on 247sports’s top prospects list, but the Greyhounds have a knack for winning. Excluding their forfeit loss to Rayne, Welsh is 48-6 over the past four seasons.

“If you’d have asked me in the beginning of the year, I may have said I’d be happy to make it there. But we want to win it again,” said head coach John Richardson. “We put enough pressure on ourselves. I don’t know if we get it from anyone else, but pressure our selves to win it.”

In 2017 Welsh beat St. Helena 38-26 to claim the school’s first football state championship.
