Catholic New Iberia Panthers
2017 Record: 12-1
How it Happened: The Panthers lone loss came in an embarrassing 37-0 fashion to Notre Dame in September. Revenge never tasted so sweet when the Panthers beat the Pioneers 33-16 in the Division III State Championship.
It’s hard to imagine improving on a 12-1 record, but it isn’t hard imaging the Panthers making another run to the Super Dome. Catholic replaces a ton of talent, returning just five total starters. But since Brent Indest took over, Catholic’s offense has been a fined tuned super car. This year the driver, junior quarterback Trey Amos, is as athletic of a quarterback as the Panthers have had. He made two interceptions in last season’s state title game as a defensive back and may be a better fit in the team’s triple-option than Diallo Landry was. Pair that with Louisiana commit Peter LeBlanc at receiver, and Catholic should have the ammunition on offense.
