EUNICE, La. (Press Release) — LSU Eunice overcame a rocky start in its 2019 Season Opener to capture a run-rule victory over North Lake College, 15-5, in seven innings at Bengal Stadium. The win helped the Bengals (1-0) improve to 16-1 in openers under head coach Jeff Willis, beginning his 17th year at the helm.
The Blazers surprised the homestanding Bengals with three two-out runs in the first inning off of two hits and two errors. LSUE would respond with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame highlighted by Tristan Welch and Nick Webre RBI singles.
North Lake would continue to shock LSU Eunice with two more runs an inning later before the Bengals would take control of the game for good.
LSUE would use back-to-back four run innings to jump out to 12-5 lead. The Bengals would need only one hit in that span, using walks, errors and passed balls to do their damage.
River Town would end the game with a walk-off RBI triple, scoring the game clinching run thanks to a throwing error. Town would just Welch and Bren Faulk as Bengals to record a multi-hit game.
After a rocky outing by starter Dane Dixon, Jerry Couch would provide a spark in relief. The freshman would strike out four batters in four full innings of two-hit shutout pitching. Couch (1-0) struck out the side upon entering in the fourth inning.
Dixon would strike out six batters in three full innings, scattering five runs, two of them earned, on four hits and just one walk.
