2017 Schedule: 2-8
How It Happened: Abbeville’s offense sputtered throughout 2017, failing to break 14 points in six games, leading to another disappointing campaign.
It’s been a rough past few years for Abbeville High School football. After the team lost its former head coach, Gary Adkins, to thyroid cancer in 2015, Kevin Kern stepped in to replace Adkins on the sidelines for the Wildcats. Kern finished out the 2015 season with a 4-7 record. But the next two seasons saw the team finish with consecutive 2-8 records in 2016 and 2017.
But that was the past. And Kern and his players want Class 3A teams to know there will be a different Wildcats team taking the field this year. A team determined to take back the Russo Trophy from its archrival, Kaplan, after 12 straight years of losses to the Pirates.
