Science can help us to unlock the mysteries of the universe and the world around us. But physics, shmysics. I want scientists to focus all of their efforts on something truly impactful — how to make my cheese taste better.
Thankfully, researchers in Switzerland (because of course the cheese scientists were Swiss) recently conducted a study in which they tried to figure out what types of music would make cheese age better. Because science.
The researchers took eight 22-pound wheels of Emmental cheese and exposed them to different types of music, like Led Zeppelin and Mozart and electronica and … whatever we are going to call Yello’s “Monolith.” A ninth wheel of cheese was also aged without any music. All of the wheels of cheese were left to age under the supervision of someone with a lot more self-control around 22-pound blocks of cheese than I have.
The different cheeses were then sampled twice by a jury in a blind taste test, and the results were in — the best-tasting cheese was the wheel exposed to A Tribe Called Quest’s last studio album, “We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service.”
“The differences were very clear in terms of texture, taste, the appearance, there was really something very different,” Swiss TV chief and jury member Benjamin Luzuy told Reuters TV.
So, now that we know hip-hop music brings out the best in cheese, scientists say the next step is to narrow it down even further.
“The idea is now to take five or 10 cheeses and put hip-hop on them and then compare,” Beat Wampfler, the cheesemaker behind the project, told Reuters.
Sounds like a rough job. I would have done so much better at science fairs if I could have done these sorts of experiments. Now if you will excuse me, I’m going to go play cans of Easy Cheese some yacht rock.
What kind of music would you play for your cheese?
