If you’re a fan of spicy food, chances are you’ve heard of Paqui chips, inventors of the world’s hottest chip ever made. These tortilla chips are so spicy, in fact, that the company only serves them one at a time.
If you haven’t taken Paqui’s One Chip Challenge yet or want to try it again, the chip is officially back with a brand new sweat-inducing recipe made with the Carolina reaper pepper, scorpion pepper and Sichuan peppercorn.
The chip for last year’s One Chip Challenge sold out online quickly, so this year, the individually packaged tortilla chip will be sold at participating retail stores nationwide, including 7-Eleven and Kroger, as well as on Paqui’s website, while supplies last.
“Because last year’s chips sold out in record time, we are especially excited to make it even easier for spice fanatics to try the new recipe by offering the #OneChipChallenge both online as well as in popular retail stores — giving fans the chance for instant gratification,” Paqui brand manager Caitlin Moralic said in a press release.
Just how hot is this chip? Well, it’s black (representing your charred tongue?) and comes in a coffin-shaped package, which should give you an idea of what you’re up against. Each package also comes with a warning that those brave enough to take the challenge should either wear gloves or wash their hands with soap immediately after handling the chip.
It seems the heat isn’t just hype. A review via a series of tweets from @yesthatkarim reveals the depths of the spiciness of the Carolina reaper. “Wow. Ok. That was hot,” he writes. “It’s not a tortilla chip so much as a CHEMICAL DELIVERY SYSTEM.”

He continues in the thread, “eating this thing causes tears, pain, agony, writhing. Basically, if you could put the year 2020 in your mouth, it would taste like this tortilla chip.”

Paqui suggests keeping milk or ice cream nearby to help soothe mouths and stomachs. Obviously, you’ll also want to keep the chip out of reach of children and pets.
Priced at $6.99, the package also contains a coupon to try one free bag of Paqui’s everyday chip flavors, which are all spicy but not nearly as hot as the challenge chip.
Paqui’s other flavors — ranked from spiciest to cheesiest — you can get with the coupon are: haunted ghost pepper, fiery chile limón, jalapeño tropicale, zesty salsa verde and mucho nacho cheese.
If you survive the challenge, you’re encouraged to share your experience by tagging @paquichips on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, along with #OneChipChallenge.
Do you think you’re up for the challenge?
