Abbeville man accused of killing teen, suspect wanted

ABBEVILLE, La. — UPDATE: The Abbeville Police Department is asking for help from the public in locating an additional alleged suspect in a Tuesday afternoon homicide.

Detectives have obtained an arrest warrant for the following suspect:

Javontae Veney
Green Street
Abbeville, LA 70510
D.O.B. 11/7/97
Count 1 - First Degree Murder
Count 2 - Attempted First Degree Murder

Police say Veney is at large and is considered armed and dangerous.

If anyone has any information regarding the whereabouts of suspects, they are encouraged to contact the Abbeville Police Department at (337) 893-2511. In addition, citizens may contact the "Tips" line at (337) 892-6777.

Note: A second suspect was previously wanted in connection with this case, but police say that shortly after the public release of his information, the individual turned himself in and spoke with detectives about the incident. Based on new evidence and his interview with police, APD had the warrant for that individual recalled. He was released without charge.

ORIGINAL STORY: A 27-year-old Abbeville man is accused of murder charges following a Tuesday shooting.

On November 3, 2020 at 3:30 p.m., the Abbeville Police Department responded to 411 Kibbe Street in reference to shots being fired in the area, according to Lt. Jonathan Touchet, spokesperson for the Department.

Upon the officer’s arrival, officers discovered a male victim on the ground in a nearby yard. The victim was identified by officers as a 16-year-old male from Abbeville, Touchet stated. The juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene by the Vermilion Parish Coroner’s Office.

Investigators say multiple people were shot at during the incident. Based on information discovered, detectives were able to secure an arrest warrant for Ryheem Veney for the charges of first-degree murder and attempted first degree murder.

Veney was located and arrested on the warrant.

The homicide investigation is active and ongoing, with more arrests expected in this case.
