Teachers and parents left with more questions after LPSS panel discussion

Our discussion with the Lafayette Parish School System about back to school plans received strong reactions from parents and teachers who are still adjusting to the changes.

The nearly hour long discussion started with questions on the delaying of the start of the school year. Some parents feel even with the push back, to September 8, it won't make a difference.

"September 8 will roll around and we'll be looking at the same options, the same choices that we're looking at now without having that time to fulfill all the safety elements," said parent Rhonda Gleason.

The conversation later turned to the sanitation of schools. Another parent of an LPSS student, Melanie Bervis, feels the district should have breaks in between hybrid schedules so that schools can be cleaned thoroughly.

"I think it's one of those things. Put on paper it looks good but I would encourage the school board to do a practice run with that if that is what they are serious about going with actually see how that will work," said Bervis.

Lafayette Parish Association of Educators President Julia Reed wanted the board to push back the start date of school. Reed thinks the board needs to use this extra time to come up with a solid plan.

"I think it gives us additional time to be flushing out these plans because I don't think they've been communicated as well. I think maybe we need to spend some of this time communicating more with the public and receiving feedback," said Reed.
