The St. Mary Parish School Board has voted to delay the start of school until after Labor Day, with students reporting on September 8.
School board members met in a special meeting Thursday to discuss the start date.
Classes were scheduled to start in the beginning of August.
Parents, students, and staff joined in a rally at the school board's central office on Wednesday, protesting the decision to open schools in August.
The revised calendar was proposed by Superintendent Teresa Bagwell.
