The interstate was closed on Wednesday, February 5 around 5:30 pm after an 18-wheeler crash near Henderson.
Police said that two jersey barrier walls were damaged in the crash and that crews were working to repair them immediately following the crash.
The barriers were located near construction on the basin bridge.
At least 30 gallons of oil spilled onto the roadway as a result of the crash.
Congestion remained in the eastbound lanes for several hours. It has now cleared.
A second crash a few miles from the initial crash site also added to the traffic issues. Tow trucks were unable to access the scene due to the congestion, according to police.
Traffic was diverted at Breaux Bridge to try to relieve that congestion.
