A 9-year-old was killed in a three-vehicle fatal crash in St. Martin Parish on Tuesday evening.

State Police say that shortly after 5:00 pm on August 27, Troop I began investigating a three vehicle fatal crash on La 31 near Ruth Bridge Hwy in St. Martin Parish. The crash claimed the life of a 9-year-old boy from St. Martinville.

The child's identity was not released.

The preliminary investigation revealed a vehicle was stopped on La 31, facing south, preparing to make a left turn. Another vehicle was being driven southbound on La 31 approaching that stopped vehicle from behind. At the same time, a third vehicle was being driven North on La 31. The driver of the second vehicle steered left into the northbound lane of travel to avoid a rear-end collision with the stopped vehicle. As a result, it struck the third vehicle head-on in the northbound lane.

A 9-year-old was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Troopers say he was improperly wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

All other occupants of the vehicles involved were properly restrained, several suffered minor to moderate injuries.

Breath samples were obtained from both drivers. Those tests confirmed that no alcohol was present for either driver.

This crash remains under investigation and there is no further information available at this time.
