As of 1:00 pm on Sunday February 14, 2021, the St. Landry Parish shelter at the Yambilee Building in Opelousas is now open.
St. Landry Parish government is continuing preparations ahead of freezing temperatures expected to begin on Sunday night and into Monday.
Parish President Jessie Bellard announced on Saturday that the parish would open a shelter at the Yambilee Building in Opelousas for residents without heat. Anyone wishing to use the shelter should bring their blankets and pillows. COVID-19 protocols will be in place.
"We want to make sure that no one is left out in the cold," said Bellard. "The parish has prepared for this event, and we are ready to assist our parish residents."

In addition to the shelter opening, the parish will have road crews on standby during the storm to clear downed limbs and trees and spread de-icing material on frozen bridges and roadways.
The parish emergency operations center will open Sunday evening and take calls about downed limbs, trees blocking roadways, and roads that might be icing over. To contact the emergency operations center, call 337-948-3688.
Sandbags are also available in the barns behind the Yambilee Building for any resident who may need them. They have been filled and stacked and are available through Sunday night.
The Yambilee Building is located at 1939 W Landry Street in Opelousas.
The St. Landry Parish Courthouse will be closed Monday and Tuesday.
