OPELOUSAS, La. — A teenager is dead after an overnight shooting in Opelousas. The St. Landry Parish Sheriff's office is working to find out exactly what happened.
The shooting occurred at the 200 block of Gulino Street, where neighbors say they were awakened by the loud shots right before 1:30 a.m.
A witness says one of the bullets entered her home through her baby's room. There was a bed with bullet holes sitting on the trailer community's curb. A few trailers nearby were hit by bullets, as well.
Officials say the 16-year-old was taken to the Opelousas General Hospital North Campus with a gunshot wound on his back. When deputies arrived at the hospital, the emergency room staff was performing CPR on the young man.
The young man later died from his injuries.
Because the shooting happened outside of city limits, the case was handed over to the sheriff’s department.
The department's day shift was fully dedicated to the investigation of this case.
No suspects have been named yet.
If you have any information about this crime, please call St. Landry Parish Crime Stoppers at 948-TIPS, or submit a tip online.
