An investigation is underway in St. Landry following a fatal shooting that left a 17-year old dead.
On September 6, 2020, an eyewitness stated that four juvenile males were walking on Lofton Street in the Opelousas area when a 17-year-old juvenile and an adult male began shooting for unknown reasons, according to St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz.
One of the four juveniles, which is 15 years-of-age, had a firearm in his possession and returned fire, striking the 17-year-old in the neck area. When questioned by detectives, the juvenile denied having the firearm and stated that he and his four friends were running down Lofton Street when shots were fired in their direction, stated Guidroz.
Investigators say it was determined that the juvenile did have a firearm in the front waistband of his pants and was observed shooting at the 17-year-old and the adult male.
The 17-year-old juvenile did not survive the injuries sustained in this incident, according to Guidroz.
The 15-year-old is currently being held at the Lafayette Parish Juvenile Detention Home.
