Monday, January 25 marks the beginning of the Second annual National News Literacy week.
This week, KATC, and our parent company E.W. Scripps are working together to help our viewers stay better informed.
The week aims to promote news literacy as a fundamental life skill and to provide the public with the tools needed to be an informed and empowered populace.
Unlike food, the media we consume doesn't come with a nutrition label.
For many, determining verified facts, credible sources and getting relevant context has never been more difficult.
"I think we've achieved a watershed moment in terms of the migration to social media and the echo chamber impact that has had," said UL Lafayette Journalism Professor, Dr. William Davie. "People are living in a filtered bubble, where they tend to believe the sources that resonate with their own opinions."
During the week, KATC will premiere stories related to the topic of news literacy on-air and online at katc.com. Jim Hummel will have more with Dr. Davie, Monday night at 5:00 pm.
The public can get involved with National News Literacy Week, Jan. 25-29, in a number of ways:
- Visit NewsLiteracyWeek.org to test your "news literacy fitness" and take the pledge to be news-literate.
- Watch NLP's new Checkology virtual classroom lesson "Conspiratorial Thinking" to learn how and why conspiracy theories develop and how to prevent people from falling for them.
- Join the conversation on social media at #NewsLiteracyWeek.
