NHC: Dorian is now a major Category 3 hurricane with 115 mph winds.
Dorian poses significant threats to the Northwest Bahamas and much of the Florida Peninsula this weekend.
The 1:00 pm advisory indicates that Dorian is 625 miles east of West Palm Beach, Florida and has a maximum sustained wind speed of 115 miles per hour.
A Hurricane watch is in effect for the Northwestern Bahamas.
The storm is expected to reach Category 4 status with 140 mph winds as it approaches the Florida Peninsula. Landfall could occur sometime on Monday, September 2 or early on Tuesday September 3.
Dorian is not expected to be a threat to the Gulf of Mexico west of the immediate West Coast of Florida.
