BALDWIN — A vigil was held Tuesday night for a 25-year-old who was shot over the weekend. Karlnita Marks was found dead on Highway 90 Frontage Road outside of Baldwin. Family says she was headed home from work in Jeanerette.
"Step up, turn yourself in, please!" Marks mother, Roynita Claridy cried out during the vigil.
Her death remains a mystery, even though her mother had been on the phone with her moments before.
"She said, 'I'm heading home,' and she was in this stretch and she said 'someone is following me,'" Claridy said.
Claridy says her daughter got quiet and their call ended. When she called back, no one answered.
"When I called, she was not home yet, 'cause I always do that as a mother," Claridy said.
She then sent her son to go check on Marks.
"He was coming off the highway, and he noticed her car. So he pulled on the side, and ran across, and seen her slumped in the car. From there he drove across the median to put her in the car. He thought someone beat her up, but he didn't know it was a gunshot wound," Mark's father, Karl said.
Marks later died in the hospital from a gunshot wound in the head. She leaves behind three children: a 6-year-old, a 3-year-old, and an 11-month-old.
"My baby was so beautiful and lovely, she was just all about her kids, she didn't deserve this, not at all," Claridy said.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Office has only said they are investigating this case as a homicide.
