Park Vista Elementary School in Opelousas held its annual Pre-K Mardi Gras Chicken Run on Wednesday, and this year's event had a bit more of a special meaning than it has before.

This year's run was dedicated to Wade Berzas, who has led the event for the past six years. Berzas is the sole survivor of last December's plane crash in Lafayette and was released from the hospital after 52 days on Monday.

The school's principal says the students celebrating Mardi Gras sends a positive message to the community.

"It's a chance to teach everybody about what real Mardi Gras is about and what we're about," explained principal Ulysse Joubert. "We have children here from 12 different countries and yet they're getting a chance to participate and learn about the community. All being one community. And that is really our message."
