Jennings Police are warning residents of a potential new telephone scam affecting those in the area.

Telephone scam targeting Jennings residents

Police Chief Danny Semmes says that people are receiving text messages from a local number that claims to be associates of their neighbor.

Officers say that the scammers, upon gaining the victim's trust, inform the person that they have won a large sum of money and need to fill out a form with personal information.

The scammers then request you send money through a PayPal, Itunes or other online money transfer.

The department says residents who may be targeted by the scam should not fill out any forms or transfer money.

Those who feel they are being targeted by a telephone scam of this type or any other are encouraged to call the FTC at 1-888-382-1222.
