New police chief to take oath tonight

JEANERETTE — The city's new police chief will be sworn in during tonight's city council meeting.

Dusty Vallot will become Jeanerette's first permanent police chief since 2017, when the city council fired then chief Jeffery Matthews from the position. Since then, city marshal Fernest Martin has served the the interim police chief.

The council will honor Martin this evening for his work running the police department over the last two years.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Jeanerette City Hall.
