Residents in Mire are concerned after their water bills have doubled and tripled in recent months. The Mire-Branch Water Company says water bill hikes are common and due to leaks.
"I knew I didn't have a water leak, and I never called a plumber, there was nothing to fix."
Amanda Thornhill says last month she received a water bill for more than $170...five times the amount of her usual bill.
"Normally my bill averages from $30-$50, I have been with the company many years. This month it was $173," said Thornhill.
She called the water company, who told her she has a leak somewhere.
"They are just dead set that I have a leak," she said.
This month, Thornhill said her bill went down in price again, without fixing anything.
"The fact that the bill went down just 30 days later says a lot."
A representative for Mire-Branch Water Corporation declined to go on camera, but said unknown leaks are very common, and they work with the customer to solve the issue.
