In Crowley, Dads and Kids in partnership with Empowering the Community for Excellence hosted a Back to School event today.
Kids received haircuts and a limited amount of uniforms were also given.
Students in Acadia parish return to school Thursday.
"We're giving out uniforms to any families who need them, first grade through high school. We do this year-round," said Elliot Mitchell, president of Dads and Kids. "Dads are a big influence on kids. We've got sports wrapped up, but education, we need to put more emphasis on that."
Mitchell said his group wants families and kids to know that someone "always has their back."
"They always know they can call. There's somebody who can help," he said.
The group tries to help schools with needs year-round, for coats and uniforms for kids.
"Whatever a school needs, we find a way to get it to them," he said.
The group accepts donations year-round, as well. If you'd like to help, check out their Facebook page.
Empowering the Community for Excellence is a program that offers kids help with schoolwork, said Audry Spencer, director.
"It's a free after-school tutoring program for kids," she explained. "We service three elementary schools, the middle school and the high school. The students can come for remediation free of charge."
