Lillian Dejean of Lafayette has been named one of LPB's 2020 Louisiana Young Heroes.
Louisiana Public Broadcasting marked the 25th anniversary of the Louisiana Young Heroes Program and announce the six high school students being recognized as this year’s Louisiana Young Heroes today:
Anthony Chiasson – 10th grade - Catholic High School in Baton Rouge
Lillian DeJean – 12th grade - Homeschooled in Lafayette
Claire Holder – 12th grade - St. Joseph’s Academy in Baton Rouge
Caleb Lewis – 12th grade - Northlake Christian School in Covington
Riley Marze – 10th grade - Leesville High School in Leesville
Garrett Sanders – 12th grade - Hammond High Magnet School in Hammond
A Young Hero is defined as an exceptional high school student who has excelled in academics, given significantly of themselves through public service, overcome adversity, exhibited extraordinary heroism, or inspired others through their deeds and strength of character.
Lillian DeJean has an unspecified autoimmune disease and a mitochondrial disorder. Because of this, Lillian lives her life intentionally, and has found her life’s purpose and her voice in disability advocacy. Lillian has received the Lafayette Parish Disability Awareness Committees Outstanding Youth Leadership Award and the Governor’s Outstanding Leadership in Disabilities Youth of the Year Award.
The Young Heroes and their families will be honored on Louisiana Young Heroes Day later this year. The day will include breakfast at LPB’s television studios, and a luncheon in their honor where they will receive special awards and recognition.
The Louisiana Young Heroes Program is being presented this year with the generous support of the Propane Dealers of Louisiana with the additional sponsorship of Hancock Whitney Bank, Community Coffee, DEMCO and Hotel Indigo.
