Lafayette sign painted to support Festival International

The Lafayette letters in Parc Sans Souci have been painted in honor of Festival International.

Festival organizers asked local artist Francis Pavy to paint the letters, hoping the new design will encourage fans of festival to continue to support downtown and the festival itself, even though the event won't happen as planned.

Francis Pavy is a narrative artist, and his work is typically "folklife and folklore of the local people juxtaposed against the fabric of everyday American life," according to his website.

Organizers made the decision to cancel Festival International last month amid concerns over COVID-19. Now, the week-long music and culture festival will continue through virtual means. Read more about that here.

Pavy said he had planned on painting the sign for Festival weekend, but even though the pandemic forced the festival online, he followed through with that plan.

"I think it's important because people need to remember that people want to remember the festival and enjoy themselves, so I wanted to remind people that the festival would be happening right now and we need to celebrate who we are and keep the festival going."
