LAFAYETTE, La. — The Lafayette Police Department have made another arrest in connection with the looting of Citi Trends over the weekend and is asking for the public's help in identifying several other suspects.
According to LPD Spokesman Sgt. Wayne Griffin, LPD officers were called in the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 24, to the Citi Trends parking lot on the Evangeline Thruway because of reports of fighting and shots fired.
Griffin says once officers arrived on the scene, there was a large crowd and they later learned that the business of Citi Trends was burglarized.
"There is nothing that suggests that the protesters were the people looting the store," said Griffin.
According to LPD, Jamie Marie Willis, 34, was arrested Monday in connection with the looting.
LPD also said that a juvenile was arrested in connection with the disturbance.
LPD has several people that they are trying to identify in connection with the looting.
Griffin is asking that if anybody can help them out, then please contact LPD or Lafayette Crimestoppers.
"We are about having people expressing their First Amendment right to protest, but our job as police officers is to make sure that they do it in a peaceful manner, that the public is safe and that they are not damaging and messing up property," said Griffin.
LPD confirmed Monday that looting and a fight took place at Citi Trends, near the scene of the officer-involved shooting that took place Friday night.
Officer responded to a shooting around midnight where two people were shot in front of Citi Trends on Evangeline Thruway and transported to a local hospital.
Officials say right now both victims have non-life-threatening injuries.
