YOUNGSVILLE — A federal grand jury has indicted a local man on child pornography charges.

Anthony "Sal" Melancon Jr., 47, of Youngsville, was indicted last month on one count distribution of child pornography, one count possession of child pornography and one count attempted production of child pornography. Each of the alleged crimes occurred in January 2017, court records indicate.

Melancon was indicted on August 21, his indictment was unsealed on August 29, and on that day he was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center as a hold for U.S. Marshals. Also on August 29 he was formally arraigned in court, records show.

A hearing was held Wednesday afternoon after the U.S. Attorney's Office asked the court to hold Melancon without bond pending his trial. The witness list for the hearing was sealed, court records show, but after the court heard their testimony Melancon was ordered detained.

Melancon was turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal's Service. He's no longer in LPCC, records indicate.
