The home once occupied by author Ernest J. Gaines during his time as a professor at UL Lafayette could soon bear his name.
According to our partners at The Advocate, the university will ask the University of Louisiana System Board to rename the property at 128 Buena Vista Boulevard as the Ernest J. Gaines Writer in Residence House.
The board will vote on the matter during a meeting on Friday, February 28, in Natchitoches.
In a letter to the UL System Board, UL Lafayette President Joseph Savoie wrote that Gaines wrote some of his most noted works at the house.
Gaines served as UL Lafayette's writer in residence from 1981 to 2004.
He died on November 5, 2019 of natural causes. He was 86.
