Lafayette's newest city marshal was sworn in on Friday.
In a ceremony scheduled for 1:00 p.m. January 8, 2021, Reginald "Reggie" Thomas took the oath of office. Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory was on hand at the ceremony held at the Heymann Performing Arts Center in Lafayette.
Thomas was joined by his wife and daughter during the ceremony. Along with his swearing in, deputies with the marshal's office were also sworn in. Attendance was open to the public.
Thomas replaces former City Marshal Brian Pope who was formally removed from office last year after a string of legal troubles.
He is the city's first black City Marshal elected into office. Also the first black person elected to a city-wide position.
Thomas was the former interim police chief for the City of Lafayette.
