Southside Sharks Varsity football team makes Friday night debut

LAFAYETTE — Since the opening of Southside High School in 2017, the Sharks varsity football team has been under development.

Marla McDuffie has two sons playing under the Friday night lights.

"The time is here, so we're not going to look back, we're only going to look forward, it's the beginning of a brand new program so that's what were excited for, starting new traditions, starting fresh," McDuffie said.

The Sharks have been playing for the last two years as a JV team. When the school opened, they only accepted Freshmen and Sophomores. This meant they couldn't have a Varsity team, since that includes Seniors. So they were able to play Thursday night games, but in football, Friday night games are everything.

"This is the first real four quarter game, although we look good in scrimmage and jamboree we're nervous... we're excited, nervous," McDuffie added.

This highly anticipated night has come with years of planning and practice.

"We knew that we were working towards something important, and something unique, that they could always say they were apart of," Steve Sinitiere said, the father of a Shark JV team member.

Win or lose, this game will be history for all of those involved.

"How many times does a kid get to say that they were part of a building of a new high school," Sinitiere said.

Friday night, the Sharks played against Northside High School.
