A vacant position on the Lafayette Parish Library Board of Control is set to be filled Tuesday by the Parish Council.

The position has attracted seven candidates. Tuesday's vote to fill the vacant spot will come days after five recent appointments to the seven-member board voted to reject a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities to fund a discussion on the history of voting rights.

Some board members expressed concern that the series was not "apolitical." Shortly after the January 25th board meeting, Library Director Teresa Elberson retired. During the meeting some board members deemed the program's speakers "extremely far left leaning" and said they weren't going to "represent the other side."

The board selected a provisional director at its meeting last week.

According to the board's website, the selected appointee will serve for the remainder of an unexpired five-year term, ending on September 30, 2025.

Tuesday's Parish Council meeting will begin at 4:30 in the City-Parish Council Auditorium.
