SCOTT, La. — The Scott Fire Department announced on Friday that it had been awarded a $90,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to replace 20 portable radios and obtain 45 additional oxygen cylinders.

SFD say that the purpose of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants from FEMA is to assist departments with obtaining
critically needed equipment to safely complete their mission.

According to a release from SFD, the funding will enhance their daily operations and ability to protect lives and property by allowing clear, precise, dependable communications, in addition to allowing firefighters to re-enter a burning structure immediately, rather than waiting to have their cylinders refilled at the scene.

SFD state that portable radios are essential pieces of equipment and that some of the portable radios currently utilized by SFD personnel are more than 10 years old.

The fire department says it's Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus cylinders provide clean, fresh breathing air to firefighters when entering into dangerous atmospheres.
