One person was killed in a house fire early Saturday morning in Lafayette.
Firefighters responded to the house fire in the 400 block of SW Evangeline Thruway around 1:20 am, according to Alton Trahan, spokesperson for the Lafayette Fire Department. When first responders arrived on scene flames were coming from the front of the dwelling. Emergency crews battled the blaze for an hour before getting it under control. The home sustained heavy fire damage.
Fire officials searched the residence and found one male victim in the dwelling, Trahan stated.
Fire investigators with Lafayette Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal Office determined the fire originated in the bedroom of the deceased.
Officials are working to identify the occupant and make notification to his next of kin.
Lafayette Parish Coroner's Office will be assisting with determining the cause of death.
Investigators did not find any evidence of a smoke alarm in the dwelling, Trahan added.
The investigation into the cause of the fire and the fatality is ongoing.
