Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department held a press conference Thursday on national youth sports programs coming to Lafayette.
Representatives with the Louisiana vs. Texas Youth Football Classic, USA Volleyball, Gridiron Flag Football, President and CEO of the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission Ben Berthelot, and former NFL players discussed youth benefits and the economic impact.
"What we're doing is we're tapping into every single recreation department I think there's over twenty thousand kids in all sports combined that are a part of the Lafayette area and what we want to do is tap into all of that," said Kordell Stewart, Former Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback.
The first event, the Louisiana vs. Texas Youth Football Classic, is scheduled for this weekend. Friday, January 22: Youth Combine, 5:30-8 p.m., Clark Field, 313 Park Avenue, Lafayette. The Classic is a first-time Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department event, drawing four teams from Texas and four teams from Lafayette Parish. Combine scorekeepers include former college and NFL Players, an Olympian, a PGA executive, and musician Bryson “Cupid” Bernard.
“It gives our kids a chance to play against kids from other areas. And having professional athletes judging the combine gives them a chance to mingle and talk to sport icons,” Lafayette Parks and Recreation Athletic Supervisor Walter Guillory said.
Saturday and Sunday, January 23-24: Football Tournament, starts at 9 a.m., 313 Park Avenue, Lafayette.
