LAFAYETTE, La. - On Friday, students at Myrtle Place Elementary in Lafayette gathered on campus for a ceremony where they observed International Day of Peace.

This is the second year the French immersion school celebrated the day also known as World Peace Day.

The entire student body, 350 pre-K to 5th grade students, gathered on the lawn to create a heart with the French word paix, or peace, written inside.

The school choir performed the song "Lean on Me" and students raised a flag to commemorate the day, which is officially celebrated on Sept. 21.

International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations in 1981. The day is described by the UN as, "a globally shared date for all humanity to commit peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace."
