Students at Milton Elementary and Middle School heard the experiences of community leaders at their Black History Month program.

Assistant Principal Ryan Martin says that the program was held in order to raise aware about Black History Month and bring in speakers to talk about their experiences and challenges they faced.

Martin hopes that the program will show student what they can do to bridge the gap for black Americans in the community.

Speakers at the celebration included Travis Broussard who is the City Attorney for the City of Opelousas, Hollis Conway LCG's Director of the Community Development Department, and Lafayette Fire Chief Robert Benoit.

The assistant principal says that he hopes students take away the messages that each speaker gave, showing students can take charge of their lives and do great things despite their struggles.
