LAFAYETTE, La. — The Lafayette Utilities System is reminding its customers that wipes that used for disinfecting, changing diapers, personal hygiene, housecleaning and more that may be labeled “flushable” do not break down the same way as toilet paper.

According to LUS, wipes will snag in sewer pipes and catch passing debris and grease, and create a “ball” that will grow to plug the pipe or clog the lift stations.

They also get drawn into sewer-line and wastewater treatment plant pumps causing additional clogs and damage to the system.

LUS is asking that if customers are using wipes other than toilet paper to please put them in the trash. Do not flush them.

No flush items also include diapers, feminine hygiene products, cotton swabs, rags, wrappers and medication.
