The Lafayette Fire Department has identified the victim of Monday's fatal fire at the Mimosa Apartment complex in Lafayette.

Fire officials say that 69-year-old Gervies Lyle Semmens was killed during the fire

He was the only occupant of the apartment, they said.

Investigators determined the fire originated on a mattress in a bedroom of the apartment. Firefighters say a cigarette may have contributed to the cause of the fire.

Neighbors were alerted by the smoke alarm activating in his apartment.

Fire officials say they are continuing to investigate what prevented Mr. Semmens from exiting the dwelling.

Reports are pending from the coroner’s office.
