Volunteers gathered in Downtown Lafayette's Parc Sans Souci to paint the Lafayette sign in honor of Black Heritage Month.

The painting service project coincided with the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday.

Students at Philadelphia Christian Academy, Clearport Learning Center and Vermilion Folk Arts Teen Advisory Council created the mural that will adorn the letters.

A priming party was held on Saturday January 19 in order to prepare the sign for today's painting.

Painters young and old were encouraged to join the groups to help paint the sign.
